3 June 2015 — With Shire Meeting Notes

The TWII is not famous.

Upcoming Events and Important Dates:

June Shire Meeting

  • Officer Report (Chatelaine): The Honorable Lord Todde has nothing specific to report, though see the two demo items below.
  • Officer Report (Exchequer): Dona Mora reports that we have money. She and Lady Delphine still need to finalize the quarterly report.
  • Officer Report (Quartermaster): Constanza reports we have about 12 posts with Red Towers on them and about 15-20 other posts we could use to surround the Isles Camp at Great Western War.
  • Officer Report (Webwright): Lord Magnus assures us we still have a website.  All of the upcoming Arts & Sciences activities have been added to the calendar.
  • Officer Report (Arts & Sciences): Lady Gwen reported that since our last meeting there has been Collegium Caidis and a trip to the Getty Villa and Center. Coming up on Saturday, June 20th, Master Martin FitzJames will be teaching a pewtercasting class; please RSVP soon if you are interested in attending. On Sunday, July 19th, is another of Baroness Rebecca’s flag painting classes. At some point in June or July Sile will be teaching a class on period music, specifically rounds. On Saturday, July 25th, in Monrovia is Scribal Play Day; carpooling with Gwen and Paul is possible. There is interest in war prep make-and-take workshops, probably focusing on warm garb and waxed linen cup covers. (If you are interested in the latter and are making garb out of linen or cotton, save your scraps.) Gwen will try to organize these over the next few months. Finally, the “What should Isles Arts & Sciences be?” brainstorming will be continuing online until June 16th.
  • Officer Report (Campmaster): Gwen says “Potrero, yay!” She is looking someone to take over as Campmaster after Great Western War. If you like to camp at wars, can herd cats, and are able to fill out a little bit of paperwork, talk to Gwen. There are three upcoming wars with pre-registration open: An Tir-West (June 10th pre-reg deadline, talk to Christian de Guerre if you want to camp with Caid), Highland War (August 10th pre-reg deadline), and GWW (pre-reg deadline is August 31st, but please pre-reg right now, even if you are not sending money until later; pay by June 30th to get extra land).
  • Lian presented financial information about the possibility of renting the Goleta Valley Community Center for Festival of the Rose / Collegium.
  • Lord Kelvin, the Darach Seneschal, talked to us about the Demo at Ventura Comic Con: Last year, Darach had a booth inside and fighting outside the building (but inside the gate). They got 75 email address and have gotten three of those people at fighter practices. They got the table for free and six or seven free badges; the rest bought $25/weekend badges. They had 6 or 7 people each day. Darach is planning on going ahead with it again and have extended an invitation to Isles to help out. Kelvin can send future information to both the Darach and Isles lists.
  • Todde shared more information about the Demo at the French Festival. We’re only going to do Saturday, July 18th. (It’s up against Dreiburgen Summer Arts/Festival of the Rose, unfortunately). We’d love to get fighters from Darach and switch back and forth between rapier and armored demos. We’d need to be set up by 11 AM; the event lasts until 7 PM. Sile will talk to the early music group about setting up and playing. We can publish a notice in the Oak Leaf (Darach’s newsletter) so it’ll be official. Todde will send out a call to the Isles and Darach lists to work out logistics. Also, we are inheriting luggable holes from Darach
  • Gwen is coordinating our Largess Presentation at Coronation. We will have woven goods, painted card, vinegars, and mini-crossbows to present to Their Majesties Athanaric and Sigri∂r. We’ll have five or six people there to make the presentation.
  • Lord Paul provided an update on planning for Isles Anniversary. We would like do a camping event at Live Oak, so we are trying to find ways to draw enough attendees to be able to afford it. Todde has been investigating reviving the Practicum of Sword concept that Starkhafn used (with their blessing). Sport of Kings as a “tournament themed” event might be reasonable model. The financial committee okay spending $100 on the administrative fee for a Special Use Application for Live Oak Camp; this does not obligate us to rent the park, but it will give us a solid schedule of fees for us to evaluation. If you have questions, concerns, or ideas, please talk to Paul and Hette.
  • Gwen let us know that four people have already met her Teach-A-Class Challenge: Philip, Delphine, Todde, Hette. For more details on how to qualify, talk to Gwen.
  • Paul updated the leaderboard for Twelve Territory Challenge.

Last Week

On Sunday, Gwen, Paul, Lodovico, Delphine, Ryan, and Layah visited the Getty Villa (to see the Roman Silver exhibit) and the Getty Center (to see the Northern Italian Courts manuscript exhibit).

May Shire Meeting

  • Officer Report (Exchequer): Dona Mora reports that we have money. She and Lady Delphine need to sync up after the meeting to finalize the quarterly report.
  • Officer Report (Chatelaine): The Honorable Lord Todde has heard back from the French Festival; see below for details.
  • Officer Report (Quartermaster): Constanza reports that we have stuff.
  • Officer Report (Webwright): Lord Magnus assures us we still have a website.
  • Officer Report (Campmaster): Potrero War is coming; Lord Lodovico will be the Isles campmaster for that. We have requested to be in the same location as last year. Pre-registration must be postmarked by April 19th; it gives us bonus land. Land allocation is open until May 5th, and you can land allocate even without pre-registration. Pre-registration for Great Western War is open; if you pre-reg and pay by June 30th, we get bonus land.
  • Officer Report (Arts & Sciences): Lady Gwen reminded us that since last meeting, we’ve had a cheesemaking class, an Italian Renaissance museum trip, a fermented foods class, and a dancing class. Collegium Caidis is this weekend – with more than 100 classes – and in celebration of its 35th anniversary, it’s free. Lady Sile will be teaching a class on rounds soon. Flag painting workshop will be on July 19th; Gwen is coordinating. Scribe curious? Scribal Play Day is July 25th in Monrovia. Gwen is working with Master Martin to come to Isles to teach a pewter casting class in July or August. As always, if you want more Arts & Sciences, talk to Gwen. In March we did a brainstorming exercise on “What do you want Arts & Sciences in the Shire to be?” She will continue that exercise and put something up online. In a few weeks, she’ll be back with phase 2.
  • Officer Report (Campmaster): Lord Lodovico reminds us that Potrero is coming up in week and half. Regulations you need to know about include: No alcohol over 20% ABV; all fires need to be off the ground and need to be out by 11 PM; and there no pouring water on the ground. Isles Camp is 4650 square feet at location P-10 on the map.
  • Demo at French Festival: We are tentatively on for a demo at the French Festival, July 18th-19th. Todde’s sense is that doing a big demo one day will be more successful than stretching across two. It’s important to have a lot a fighters to rotate through; it gets pretty exhausting with only four people. Saturday is probably our best bet. We will likely need help from Darach if we want to do heavies. We will need to publish it in a newsletter (either the Crown Prints or perhaps the Darach newsletter) and have marshals in order to get the SCA insurance coverage. We’ve requested a 60×40 space; what we have done in the past (an eric with a double rope + a table + a popup) would fit in there.
  • GWW pre-registration is open. Fill out the info now; if you pay before the end of June,  you get extra land. Are there any camp improvement projects you’re interested in prior to GWW? (If so, you’re probably volunteering to spearhead it.) It would be nice to have camp boundary markers (ropes, walls, etc.) to keep people from wandering through. Before next month, Constanza will take a look at what we might already have that might work. We might also consider having a working camp kitchen to make it easier for people to clean up after themselves.
  • The Shire has some new guilds. The Brewer’s Guild has been meeting monthly for the last six months, with about 8 people each time. We trying to host the Kingdom Brewer’s Guild meeting in either the 3rd or 4th quarter. Meanwhile, Sile has talked to Catherine Ainsdale of Lancashire about doing a joint Cooking Guild with Darach. They’ll start figuring things out after Coronation. In Dancing Guild news, we had five people at a dance practice on Sunday. Delphine is leaning toward trying to organize something at Carreg Wen Anniversary or some other time in June. Finally, while not a Shire Guild, Sile has started up an early music group that is will be meeting twice a month at at her house; SCA people are welcome to join in.
  • Ventura Comic-Con is coming August 28-30. Darach is in favor of having us help out. Todde’s suggestion is that we pick one day (probably Saturday).
  • The Nottingham Festival will be the first two weekends in November in Simi Valley. Are we interested in doing something there?
  • Gwen will be coordinating a pair of museum trips at Roman Silver at the Getty Villa and Italian Renaissance manuscripts at Getty Villa on May 31st
  • The Huntington Library has an exhibit on the Magna Carta from June through October. We may try to organize a trip for that.
  • Gwen is coordinating largess for Coronation on June 6th.Their Highnesses’ Largesse coordinators indicated they are particularly interested in children’s items (youth combat and more). If we decide what we want to do, we can make happen at a Craft Night. Hetta suggests building mini-crossbows and will be bring them to do on the 26th. If you have other ideas for largesse, talk to Gwen.
  • Our weekly (unofficial) fighter practice is moving to 7:30. Todde may be interested in teaching cut-and-thrust every other week.

Last Week

Many  people in the Shire were sick (thus no Shire meeting), but Delphine, Gwen, and Paul attended Altavia Anniversary.

8 April 2015 — With Shire Meeting Notes

The TWII has one shot.

Upcoming Events and Important Dates:

March Shire Meeting

  • Officer Report (Exchequer): Dona Mora reports that we have money. Delphine and Mora need to sign some paperwork and we probably need to send NMS to Kingdom.
  • Officer Report (Chatelaine): THL Todde has been trying to get a meaningful answer from French Festival about holding a demo. Also, Delphine and Todde will get Todde warranted.
  • Officer Report (Quartermaster): Constanza is happy that we got new shelves for storage. Yay! She will be asking reimbursement for them. People have been asking about what camping gear the Shire has, so she will be doing an inventory.
  • Officer Report (Arts & Sciences): Lady Gwen reports that we had two A&S classes in March: Dona Mora’s comporment class, and THL Rebecca’s flag painting workshop. Upcoming classes include an Intro to Cheesemaking on Thursday, April 9th at 7 PM at Gwen and Paul’s, and Wild Fermented Foods and Beverages on Sunday May 3rd at Lord Philip’s. Based on feedback from those present, she will continue to use the Facebook events and Shire’s Google Calendar, as well as email reminders for to the list, to get word out about classes and events. Coronation is June 6th, the Shire would like to make an awesomely large presentation; talk to Gwen if you want to help. She is also going to re-start the “what does Isles want from Arts & Sciences” survey now that Pentathlon is over. As always if you want to teach or learn anything, talk to Gwen.
  • Guilds: We currently have one, the Brewers’. It sounds like there is interest in a Cooking Guild, perhaps jointly with Darach (with locations alternating monthly). Lady Sile tentatively volunteered to help organize this (with help from Gwen). Two other possible guilds have come up (Music and Dancing) and Gwen wants to know if there is support needed to make them happen. Based on conversations at King’s Hunt, it sound like there is sufficient interest in music to make that happen; Sile and Lord Paul will talk about it. There is also interest in dancing, with a tentative first meeting on May 10th. Delphine will lead; Gwen will talk with Lian about the site.
  • Privy Council: Many things happened. If you have questions, talk to Delphine, Gwen, or Paul.
  • Our Friends in Darach: Based on conversations at Privy Council, Delphine has spoken with the Darach seneschal, who wants to run events with us. Bids for 2016 local events are still open, so we might consider doing a day of revelry if we can determine a good site. Darach is also interested in doing Kingdom-level events jointly as well. Delphine will continue to investigate with them. Comic-Con Demo with Darach will also be moving forward.
  • Isles Anniversary: Paul and Hette are still investigating what we might do. Sage Hill was okay, but clearly not as good as Live Oak, but much cheaper. If you have thoughts about Anniversary, talk to Paul and Hette.
  • Paul’s Crown Challenge: Thank you to all those who completed the challenge; it helped to raise the profile of Isles throughout the kingdom. Prizes will be coming.
  • Gwen’s AS 50 Challenge: Lady Gwen challenges everyone in the Shire to teach a class during AS 50 (May 1, 2015 – April 30, 2016). The only requirements are that the class must be SCA-related, open to anyone in the Shire, and notification must be sent to the Isles A&S Officer at least one week in advance. All those who complete this challenge will receive a prize handmade by Lady Gwen.
  • Paul’s AS 50 Challenge: Lord Paul challenges everyone in the Shire to attend an official event in at least 12 different Shires or Baronies during AS 50. All those who complete this challenge will receive a prize handmade by Lady Paul.
  • Santa Barbara Museum of Art: The Shire will be visiting the SBMA to see the current exhibition of Renaissance paintings on Thursday, April 30th, from 6p-8p. Admission is free, and there will be period music as well. And it’s Hette’s birthday! Modern attire; Lady Gwen is coordinating.
  • Getty Manuscript Exhibit: Tentatively, the Shire will be visiting the Getty to see their manuscript exhibit “Renaissance Splendors of the Northern Italian Courts” on May 31st. Lady Gwen will coordinate and see if folks from Darach are interested in joining us.

June 6th is Coronation; Gwen is organizing largesse for that. If you are interested in making largesse to present at Coronation or at King’s Hunt, let her know. Finally, just after the meeting (and online), there will be an “Arts & Sciences in Isles” brainstorming activity.
