October Shire Meeting

  • Officer Report (Seneschal): Lady Delphine reports that we still have a Shire.
  • Officer Report (Exchequer): Dona Mora assures us we still have money. The purchase of an additional shelf for storage was approved.
  • Officer Report (Webwright): Lord Magnus will be updating the Scriptorium (which will be renamed to the Library) with song references.
  • Officer Report (Chatelaine): The Honorable Lord Todde attended the Chatelaine’s Roundtable at GWW and is on now on the Chatelaine’s list, but is awaiting a warrant. He would like $100 to print Isles business cards and posters for coffee shops; Hetta will help design them. Lian Bao points out there are things on the SCA Newcomers’ site that could be used. Todde will work with Magnus to make the website more newcomer friendly. He also informed is also a teacher at La Colina Junior High that’s interested in having us maybe do something for her, so he will open a dialog.
  • Officer Report (Gold Key/Quartermaster): Constanza would like a day either before or after Isles Anniversary (depending on people’s availabilty) to go through loaner garb and gear.
  • Officer Report (Chronicler): Lord Paul has nothing to report.
  • Officer Report (Arts & Sciences): Lady Gwen reported that there was no formal class for September because of war prep. October class will be pennon-making with Isles heraldry for Anniversary; this will start on October 21 and may be on 28th as well. Coronation is coming; don’t forget about the Dirty Dozen Donation Derby and the Shire presentation to Their Highnesses. Gwen will coordinate the latter and will be asking pretty much every week between now and then. Two potential future classes ideas were floated: a multi-week mead brewing class, probably taught by Paul; and a heraldic flag design and painting before King’s Hunt, probably through Rebecca and Philip. (There seemed to enough interest in both that they are worth pursuing.) Gwen will encourage Eleanora and Sile to have a monthly music practice during Craft Night out on the patio. The would-be dancers should talk to the musicians about also doing dance during that. Delphine will teach a dance refresher course in November as a prep for Yules and 12th Night.
  • The Isles camp at Great Western War was a fun place to be. Next year, we would like to have decorative ropes or walls to indicate camp boundaries, so as to keep people from wandering through the middle of camp unintentionally. After Isles Anniversary, Todde and Magnus will figure out how to put vents in the Blob to make it cooler. If you attended classes that you particularly enjoyed and are interested in sharing, please talk with Gwen.
  • Lord Lodovico is still working on getting us set up as a UCSB OSL group. It turns out that we can do it with just a faculty or staff sponsor, but we would like to have a student.
  • The Isles Archery Range Project is moving forward. Lady Hetta is now a warranted archery range marshal. Lodovico will be following up with Ian to see where we are at with Chabad.
  • Lian Bao is interested in reaching out to families with children. She will work with Delphine to get warranted as a Youth Activities Officer and we will continue to explore possibilities for the future, but likely nothing will happen before Anniversary, as this is one of the areas of SCA policy that we have to be the most careful about.
  • Isles Anniversary will be organized around a Pas d’Armes, inspired by the Saint George Pas that Paul participated in at GWW. Paul still needs volunteers; talk to him if you don’t have a job yet. (We’ll likely need everyone in the Shire to help out in some way.)

Last Week

Great Western War was last week near Taft, CA. Congratulations to Lady Hetta, who received an Award of Arms at Grand Court on Saturday.

This Week

Archery Open, hosted by the Barony of Lynondemere, is on Saturday. Talk to Lodovico if you’re interested in carpooling.

Further Away & Other Bits

Dreiburgen Anniversary is on Saturday, October 25th, in Jurupa Valley, CA. Is anyone planning on going?

Agincourt Tourney is at Woodley Park in Van Nuys, on Sunday, October 26h. There will probably be a sizable group of Isles-ian archers and throwers attending; email the list if you’re looking for a ride.

The Shire has a Facebook Group, for those who are so inclined to discuss things there.
