July Shire Meeting

  • Officer Report (Webmaster): Lord Magnus is sick and has nothing to report.
  • Officer Report (Exchequer): Dona Mora says we still have money. Linda would like to be reimbursed for her bins; she’ll submit receipt to Mora.
  • Officer Report (Quartermaster): Constanza is looking at shelving units; see Shed news below.
  • Officer Report (Chatelaine): Neither Countess Jane nor her deputy have anything to report.
  • Officer Report (Arts & Sciences): Lady Gwen reports that in June Mistress Caterucia did A&S Fair/Pentathlon session in Isles. There will be another Isles Brew Day this coming Sunday at Gwen & Lord Paul’s house; he will be sending information to the list soon. Master Cormac will be working with Jane to teach and etching and enameling class on July 27th at her house; more details, including start time, to come. No A&S classes are yet planned for August; talk to Gwen if you have any requests or ideas. Finally, there is a form on the Great Western War website for people who would like to teach a class there.
  • Crown Prints (Paul): The Shire’s contact information the Crown Prints needs updating, as they still think Lord Lodovico is the Seneschal and that we meet at Rusty’s. Delphine will fix it.
  • Great Western War (Gwen): Eight people are pre-registered for Isles camp, which means we have a camp. There is likely to be a potluck dinner on Saturday; Lord Edward & Lady Adelais will probably bring the fire pit. Gwen is interested in a Isles Camp Beautification Project, with some type of heraldic display to indicate “This is Isles!” (probably with Red Towers everywhere). It sounds like there is interest in this, so Gwen will continue the conversation.
  • Blob Dags (Delphine): If people want to paint their heraldry onto dags for the Blob, talk to Delphine.
  • The Shed (Constanza): The shed is dead. Lodovico would like the stuff out of his garage by the end of August, but sooner is better. Paul has three or four sets of heavies loaner gear that will be coming back into Isles storage soon. Constanza and Delphine are looking at shelving at CostCo; we should make sure that anything we purchase can be moved. If they deem it appropriate, Constanza and Delphine have approval to buy one of the units at ~$140. Once shelving is in place, we will likely pick a Tuesday evening to converge on Lodovico’s garage and move everything. Thank you to Norm and Linda for use of their van to haul the shed to the dump and donating the cost of disposal.
  • Isles Anniversary (Paul): Anniversary is November 15th; in order make it into the November issue of the Crown Prints, we need to have most of the details worked out by the end of September. Paul, as Event Steward, wanted to know what people would like to see/do/have at Isles Anniversary this year, so as to start thinking about requirements for site. Paul will take these under advisement and report back next month:
    • Delphine would like to see an evening feast. We may need to advertise crash space. Could double as an Isles Yule.
    • Lodovico suggests fundraising, maybe with food, drinks, or raffle. It would be nice to build up a buffer.
    • Dancing
    • A wet site
    • A&S tourney (with early advertisement) – also more performance
    • Butchering Shakespeare
    • Finding a way to involve the populace in the fighting – like the grievances last year
    • Fun and maybe a bit of silliness
    • Whim Tourney – prizes given for lots of stuff
    • Edible site tokens
    • Baubling gambling on the tourney – sell starter bags of baubles
    • A theme!
  • UCSB Shire recruitment (Paul): USCB Fall Quarter starts September 28th. We don’t get much advertising from the University anymore, and we’re not sure how student organizations advertise. How do we the right people’s attention at the right time? Could we do a “holiday gift faire”? Sheilah mentioned that back in the day, the SCA challenged the Engineering Department to see who could lob an egg the farthest and had a big event around that. Delphine will ask current students how they found out about stuff when they were Freshmen. Lodovico will ask OSL what other student organizations do. Delphine and Jane will investigate a Welcome Week booth. Next month we’ll talk about what sort of activities we want to hold, so that we have something to advertise. As an aside from UCSB-focused recruitment, Todde and Paul will coordinate to put regular notices in the Independent.
  • Archery Range (Delphine): Ian from Carreg Wen is talking with the rabbi, who has a sick family member. We’re just going to wait on that.

Last Week

The Shire spent time with friends, family, and craft projects.

This Week

Lyondemere Anniversary will be on Saturday, July 12th. The theme is “Try Something New” and will include armored, unarmored, and rapier combat;  an arts and sciences display (for which the fiber entries will use the new A&S Fair / Pentathlon judging sheets); a basket raffle fundraiser for the Barony; and, of course, the changeover of Baronage. See http://www.lyondemere.org/anniversary-2014/ for more details; email the Isles list if you would like to carpool.

Further Away & Other Bits

Caid Prize Tourney is Saturday, July 26th in Camarillo. It is a fundraiser for the Kingdom, and there will be a raffle for fabulous and fun items, as well as Arts and Sciences, heavy and rapier lists, heraldry displays, and the Sheep to Shawl event. Email the Isles list if you would like to carpool.

Pre-registration for Great Western War (October 8-13 in Wintermist/Taft, CA) is available until August 31st.  There is an Isles camp.   http://caid-gww.org/
