Last Week

Angels Anniversary was last Saturday in La Verne. From The Honorable Lady Mora Ottavia Spadera:

Adelais and Edward were also there, no one else from Isles. The theme of the day was ‘Shoes’. It was ungodly hot. His majesty and their Highnesses were present, as well as the Baron and Baroness. Don’t know much about how the armored fighting went, but rapier had 18 or 19 entrants to the list, and unarmored had maybe six. Todde won both the fencing championship (defeating Don Alex K and Don Lot Ramirez in the final) and also the people’s choice A&S for his lovely punchwork shoes (but did not win the baronial championship A&S).   Also of note, THL Owain ap Gwyllim Pengryth was one of the two autocrats of the day, and he is an ex-Isle and former Islesian Seneschal, creator of the Isles Hand of the Hunt.

Despite the heat, I personally had a very good day of fighting, though I did not make it to the final rounds in the rapier tournament. All fighters got to fight in the first 5 rounds in a Swiss 5 (meaning you can’t repeat off-hand weapons, and must use 5 out of 6 of the possible styles — single, buckler, baton, cloak, dagger, and case of swords), and anyone who entered the A&S people’s choice got a do-over in one of their fights. I forgot about mine in the first round, which was the only fight where my head wasn’t where it should have been, and meant that I didn’t get to move on from the Swiss 5. Fighters who came out clean, or with only one loss (five fighters in total) went on to the semi-final single-elim round. Don Todde faced a very challenging draw of white scarves and excellent duelists, and still came out of the Swiss 5 unscathed, and went on to win the day through the semis and king-of-the-hill final.

This Week

Tanwayour Anniversary is on Saturday in Bonita. Anyone going?

Turkish Slipper Workshop taught by Countess Albra is on Sept 22th. From Lady Gwen Hir:

Join Countess Albra for an all-day workshop on Turkish Slippers, Sunday Sept. 22nd, starting at 10am at Todde & Mora’s house.

You’ll start with leather, fabric, and trim, and by the end of the day you’ll have a pair of beautiful slippers made just for your feet. These slippers are appropriate for men and women.  They can be worn with Persian or Turkish garb or just when you want comfortable footwear.

There are still a few spots available, so if you’d like to attend, please let me know so that I can be sure there’s a materials kit for you. There will be a kit fee of approximately $20 for all of the materials you’ll need. Please bring: scissors, straight pins, a 6″ embroidery hoop, and note taking materials. Lunch will be ordered in or you may bring your own.

Hope to see you at the Slipper Workshop!

Further Away & Other Bits

Rapier Open is Sept 28th.  See for more details.  Contact Don Todde to volunteer.

Isles Anniversary is in November and really needs an event steward.  If you’re interested, please contact Lodovico.
